Summer Read at Home Plan Being a good reader is critical if a student is going to be successful in school. In 2017, the Michigan Legislature implemented the Third Grade Reading Law to ensure that students exit 3rd grade reading at or above grade level.
Reading response journals are a place where students respond to literature by recording their thoughts, feelings, reactions, and questions about the books they are reading. Reading responses encourage higher order thinking skills, and help students confidently share their thinking about what they read.

The general rule is 10 minutes of homework for every grade level. That would be 20 minutes for 2 nd grade. I don’t include reading at home when I’m talking about homework. So I expect 20 minutes (or so) of homework and 20 minutes of at-home reading. I only assign homework Monday-Thursday (again reading is not included in this).
